I love reading, all sort of books, articles. I was always a bookworm, packed up with books. It may sound weird but I stopped buying books, I do not have enough room to store them, I bought e-reader, instead, which appeared to be an excellent device for reading and keeping books.
There is one sort of literature genre I like the most, a part of English literature, which is demanding and difficult.
English literature is fascinating and sophisticated. One of its kind. It is in fact Anglo-Saxon Literature, not everyone knows that William Shakespeare used Anglo-Saxon Language. The origins of English language derives from Englese or Angles, which stand for one of Anglo-Saxons tribes, they invaded England. The domination of Saxons was visible in Essex and Wessex, Angles in Highlands, Jutes in Kent. New geographical structure of England appeared, so-called counties.
Anglo-Saxons were Germanic people and won culture domination against Britons. Celtic and Saxon cultures clashed with one another, mixing different dialects.
OLD-ENGLISH PERIOD lasted between 400 and 1100.
The most significant political change took place when the king of Normandy took over the English throne in 1066, William the Conqueror's reign made an impact on the language and literature.
French appeared in English court, it was a language of Nobles. English literature had Germanic basic, lots of French vocabulary appeared in English language.
MIDDLE -ENGLISH PERIOD lasted between 1100- 1500, is characterized by the presence of poets such as Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the greatest, whose "Canterbury Tales" - introduced a new dialect - London dialect.
TUDOR AGE - is probably the most sophisticated (not to mention Romantic Period in English Literature)
The Father of English Literature entertained the Tudors, his name was William Shakespeare.
Old English period is dominated by the mythology, Celtic one which portrays King Arthur, a legendary king, a fictional figure, it is believed he reined (if real) between 460 - 400. He fought against Anglo-Saxons.
In Arthurian legend French spirit is highly underlined, Celtic life vividly described, the center of their tradition Tara was situated nearby south of Dublin. In Canterbury Celts worshiped their Gods.
One of the most important figure in Arthurian tales was Bard - the Bard represented in literary genre so-called oral tradition, the nature was glorified, it was a very important linguistic aspect connected with Ogham.
Beowulf
Represents Anglo-Saxon heroic poem, very long, miraculously it survived, it is a perfect example of Oral Germanic Tradition, Scop - Bard Minstral.
Beowulf portrays structure of the society, King and his Thones, they served under the king, between the King and the Thones were strong relationships. The King was a ring giver and sharer of treasure.
Beowulf is an anonymous poem, his detailed origins remind unknown, the poem is partially realistic alike "Illiad", however unrealistic things such as dragons are common and well described.
It is estimated that 6th century - the setting of the poem took place, 8th century is believed to be a date of composition, 10th century - probably the epos was written down.
Beowulf represents Christian tradition, in 10th century England was Christianised, two nations are decsribed: Danes with King Horthgar and Geats with King Beowulf.
The poem has got two parts, in first part Beowulf foghts with Grendel, in second part Beowulf fights with Dragon.
Beowulf represents Alliterate Verse, Elegaic or Heroic one. In the poem reptile monster is described, so-called wyrm or wyrd - it is an embodiment of evil, something very unpleasant, these are features of Grendel. In Beowulf Nordic Tutonic Mythology does not distinguish good end evil but present something that has got personal features. Evil is always out of there.
People and Gods represent side of good, it fights evil which has got transcendental form. Dragons, so-called Dragonitas are personification of destruction.
In first episode king Horthgar is attacked in Mid-Hull by Grendel, he represents evil not only in the way he looks but also in the way he thinks. His father was Cain the first evil owner. He is almost like Satan, cruel in his plans.
He kills people by eating them. Horthgar is powerless, he doesn't know how to kill the monster. Beowulf, one of king's warriors is about to kill the evil, he refused the help of his people, he wants to defeat it himself, yet, it is not that simple, Grendel is protected by a charm against metal weapon. It cannot be killed by a sword. Nonetheless Beowulf is fortunate, he kills Grendel with his hands, it made him proclaimed the greatest warrior ever.
In second part Beowulf fights with Dragon, it has to be killed to give Beowulf respect throughout his own people.
The king and his people came to dragon's cave and awoke him, made him angry. He would have defeated dragon if his sword hadn't been dropped. The dragon is killed, stabbed in his stomach, unfortunately Beowulf is affected by the dragon's poison, before he died he chose his heir, he also made a speech which had Christian elements. Beowulf is burnt on a pyre.
